Merry Christmas, our dear readers!

Last Sunday meeting of the children’s art-group was devoted to Christmas.

By the way, we have prepared for you an illustrated story about Jesus Christ’s birth for children which you can download here or in the section of this blog Material for Kids”.

Last Sunday, there were 4 children at the art meeting. First, we sang songs. Due to it, the children’s attention was established (as well as the atmosphere of our today’s meeting). Then a little theoretical and practical episode followed: I asked the kids how one can make other people happy?… The children were smiling but keeping silence. When finally the voice of an adult was heard, “You can give someone a present”, I took a bag where each child found a parcel with toy cats and dogs :) . I wanted to show the children not only the theory how one should act but also its practical use (and also to illustrate the idea that presents can be given not only for something but also at any time without any special reason :) ).

Thinking over the forthcoming meeting of the children’s art-group, I decided that it would be a nice idea to devote the meeting to some certain topic/image. As we are only starting organizing children’s art meetings at our place, why not devote the meeting on Sunday to Shri Ganesha? Why to him? In Indian mythology Shri Ganesha is considered to be the Deity (or, in other words, an aspect of God Almighty) who protects children, their innocence and purity, he also helps when you start something new. Why Indian mythology? Our government announced year 2009 a year of India in Russia :) (well, we just like Shri Ganesha :) and we try to show children the understanding of and respect for different cultures).

Today there were three kids at our art-meeting: Soniya (1,5), Kirill (3,5) and Bazhena (5,5). We showed them a picture of Shri Ganesha and asked them what qualities they thought he had? “He is kind, honest, wise and he is very obedient to his mother. He also wants us to have such qualities!”

Indian culture-Shri Ganesha

Then we told the children the legend about the creation of Shri Ganesha (why he’s got an elephant’s head).Red flowers (red is the colour of Shri Ganesha) and sweet things (Ganesha likes them very much) added special atmosphere to our today’s meeting.

The art&craft part was also devoted to Shri Ganesha. We discussed his appearance beforehand: he’s got a trunk, big belly, one tusk, four hands, one of which gives blessings, another holds sweets and in the other two hands there are weapons to fight with evil things. His transport is, according to the legend, a little mouse. And again this craft was appropriate for both a 1,5-year-old and a 5,5-year-old. I think I have already got used to such conditions :)

On the cardboard I drew the contours of a boy-elephant. The children put glue onto the elements of the image and then poured semolina mixed with kum-kum (Indian clay) there – Ganesha should turn out red.

For the last children’s art group which gathered at our place I made a tasty curd tart (before I had tried several other recipes but finally chose this one). This time I made this curd tart for the first time after our daughter was born (she is 19 mo now). No, the preparation of this curd tart does not take much time. You just want to cook it for very special occasions :) I remember I made such a curd tart for the doctor who was examining me (together with our little one sitting in my belly) during my last months of pregnancy – I really wanted to make something pleasant for the doctor, so good she was! The curd tart was a great success!

When I took the decision to start a children’s art-group, I also decided that I would try to cook dishes for the dinner which follows the art part of the meeting myself and not to buy ready-made things in the store. And all the dishes which are on the table, should be appropriate both for little kids and adults (no chocolate, for example, which our toddler hasn’t even tasted so far).

So, at our first creative meeting we enjoyed mashed potatoes with chicken, tomatoes, vegetable marrow paste and three different cakes.

Today, I am going to share the recipe of one of these cakes with you.

The Recipe of a Delicious Cake

Would you like to treat your guests to something not very ordinary? Why not bake a pie with… fruit-paste stuffing (based on fruit-paste sweets) for them?! A wonderful dessert for a Christmas table or a birthday party.

Friday. 4:40 pm. 50 minutes are left till the guests arrive. “We-ell… I have to dress myself and our daughter nicely (the latter can take, let’s say, many minutes). But I still have time to make a pie!”

To be frank, I started making this pie in the morning – as far as the dough is concerned. And now I had to put everything on a baking tray and place it into the oven for some 30 minutes.

I can’t say when we would have started modeling with Soniya if I had not noticed playdough in a children’s store…

Our daughter (16 mo old) and I are sitting down on the floor and I open the box joyfully anticipating the reaction of Soniya. A smile of amazement appears on the child’s face and the next moment the eyes of our little one are already cheerfully looking at me. And at that moment I am breaking into a smile as if in my life too something has happened for the first time :)

I am tearing a small piece of the playdough and making a sausage from it. New forms and images are born before Soniya! In a moment, she herself is making a sausage (I have not expected that such a little child is capable of doing it! :) ). And here she’s got a Read the rest of this entry »

Tip of the Day

To tell you the truth when I was getting married I was not good at cooking. Well, my pancakes with stuffings were really delicious but it was the only dish in my menu. Then I learnt some recipes from my mum and friends. My hubby also taught me to make some tasty meals. I remembered about his brand-name dishes now when there are lots of autumn vegetables and fruits in the gardens and our one-year-old started refusing from these very vegetables if they are cooked without anything else.

Millet with vegetables and berries. Recipe

millet with vegetables and berries. Recipe

Boil about a glass of millet adding a bit of salt into the pan. Warm up butter in a frying pan with high sides. Put peeled and diced carrots (2 medium-sized) and then pumpkin (about ¼ of a whole pumpkin) into the frying pan. Stew them without water under the lid. When the carrots and pumpkin have become soft, add the boiled millet into the frying pan. The dish is ready!

And now attention! It was the easiest variant of the dish. In our family, we make it a bit tastier. The real savour to it can be added by: Read the rest of this entry »

When the weather becomes hot, one wants lightness in everything, including the food. Chicken plays an important role both in home and festive menu. Today, we offer you 5 marvelous recipes of  chicken, which we and our friends have tried.

In all the recipes, the chicken should be skinned before its preparation – it makes the chicken tender and not fat.

Chicken with Apples in Sour Cream – an exclusive recipe from Natalie (which was created spontaneously during the celebration of her son’s first birthday).

You will need:

Chicken breasts – 2
Apples (not very sweet) – 2
Onion – 1
Sour cream – half a glass
Salt, pepper, nutmeg, lemon, some greenery like dill or parsley (dried or fresh)

Brown the onion, add peeled apples chopped in cubes (sprinkle them with lemon juice for the apples not to get darker), fry them till they become soft. Put the apples aside. In the same frying pan fry the sliced chicken fillet on all sides (for some 5 mins). Natalie fried everything using butter (she hadn’t got oil at that time) and the taste became even better. Then mix the apples and chicken; salt and pepper them; add nutmeg (a little bit) and add hot water and sour cream. Stew for 10 minutes. Add the greenery and the grated rind of the lemon half. Take away the dish from fire. That’s it. You can serve it with rice. Everybody enjoyed the meal greatly!

Chicken in Georgian Style

This chicken for Sonya’s first birthday was cooked by Anastasia for guests. “Once on Saturday I was watching TV where there was a program on cooking. I was giving our daughter her breakfast at that time. Everything was explained in such detail in the program that one, first, could not resist the temptation to want to make it and, second, everything was so easily cooked that it was not difficult to remember the recipe. And when can a new mother  try the recipes if not when expecting guests?!”

I started looking for the recipes of the cake for our baby’s first birthday party a week before our daughter’s birthday (not all adult food is appropriate for a baby!). I wanted to find a cake which could be made quickly from the ingredients that I had already added into our baby’s menu. A cake from a supermarket suits the guests of the little one  but not for him. It is so unjust that the one who has his birthday cannot enjoy the dessert!

I found the recipe. But when making the cake, I changed and improved it a bit. Here is what I got:

Tip of the Day

When our daughter had just turned 2 months old, we got a parcel (by post) from our Moscow friends. There were beautiful suits, toys and… inflated balloons. At first I was surprised. It seemed Volodya did not want to be trivial. But in two minutes I suddenly realized the importance of the balloons: there had been much free space in the box and for the things not to fly about the box (not to break and rumple) our friends decided to inflate balloons and occupy all that space with them.

Then Nadya, Volodya’s wife, was telling me: “The post office was closing already. And we had to go to the station. So, we were packing quite quickly what Read the rest of this entry »
